"Sponsoring a bill is very different than co-sponsoring a bill," Canon wrote in an email."Many bills that become law have a hundred or more cosponsors, so bill sponsorship is the meaningful indicator of the member of Congress who had primary influence on determining the content of a bill." According to Congress.gov, Ryan has sponsored 109 pieces of legislation and co-sponsored 1,067. New York Times reporter Jackie Calmes said it was clear from their conversation that Canon was referencing sponsored bills, and the statement’s context in the article reflects that.Ciccariello-Maher has a history of making controversial statements on Twitter, sometimes along racial lines.
In an op-ed Tuesday in the Washington Post, Ciccariello-Maher said that his comments eventually ended up on Fox News, where the network mischaracterized his thoughts to suggest he blamed both President Trump and the victims of the shooting.
“He’s clearly commenting on the president of the United States and the American voters by saying, essentially, ‘Because they voted for Donald Trump, then this is the reason why this happened,’ ” [email protected] BJones3 on professor blaming #Las Vegas massacre on Trump: "Drexel needs to come out swinging on this and fire this person." pic.twitter.com/ADoe PXDTVW — FOX Business (@Fox Business) October 5, 2017 “The narrative of white victimization has been gradually built over the past 40 years,” Ciccariello-Maher wrote.
“White people and men are told that they are entitled to everything,” Ciccariello-Maher wrote in a series of tweets attempting to explore why so many mass shootings are carried out by white men.
“This is what happens when they don’t get what they want.” Ciccariello-Maher didn’t just go after conservatives; he also attacked liberals for their push for stricter gun laws in the wake of the tragedy.
But Ryan’s camp challenged how Canon assessed Ryan’s tenure.
